All Spray Tans Are NOT Created Equal!

With summer slowly coming to a close, soon the best option for a sun-kissed glow will be the un-conventional (and safest!) route- the spray tan. 

The question I have gotten asked time and time again about the spray tans I offer: Will it make me ORANGE??  My short answer is, of course- No way!- but I feel compelled to explain the difference in our formula vs. other 'booth tans' or anything you can find in a drug store:

1. The main and only active ingredient in most self-tanners is DHA- Dihydroxyacetone.  Used alone, this is responsible for the carrot-like appearance of many D-list celebs from a tiny city on the east coast.. you know the ones ;)
2. Erythrulose is the magic-maker- this is the other key ingredient in my tanner!  Erythrulose produces a slower developing tan, taking 24 to 48 hours to fully develop. The final tone of erythrulose is slightly redder than the DHA based tan. When combined with DHA, the resulting sunless tan lasts longer, fades more smoothly, and produces a more cosmetically pleasing color tone that lasts for about 10 days.
3. I airbrush all my clients by hand (and on-site if needed!), taking the time and care to ensure that you have a streak-free & flawless experience!

In a nutshell, I have been a sunless tanner for years now and never have I seen such an impressive, even tan until now.  If only I could figure out how to spray-tan the back side of my body... :)

At-Home Dry Skin Remedies

Well have I got some great news for you!  If you can't afford/don't have time/just flat out don't want to get on a proper skin care regimen right now, here are some great at-home recipes for nurturing that dry skin. 

• Firstly, you must exfoliate to assist the epidermis in shedding those dead skin cells.  Mix in some sugar (regular white sugar, not the raw kind with bigger granules- this will do more harm than good!) to your facewash when washing.  Gently massage your entire face, forehead and neck for one minute and rinse.
• Mix some plain yogurt with one tablespoon of honey in a bowl.  Apply to your face and leave on for 5 minutes and rinse!

 Yogurt adds enzymes to the skin and assists in activating your natural oils to help get your skin back to a normal state.  Honey has been a long-time skin care savior due to the ability to attract water (keeping more of it in your skin to moisturize) and the acids that wash away the dead cells and help bring back your healthy glow.

Enjoy your mask.. and if you have leftovers, it's a great treat as well :)

Let's face it, you have tried dozens of mascara brands right?  Well, maybe not dozens but I know that I have constantly been on the lookout for a mascara that volumizes, lengthens and thickens without all the fallout.. this is not sexy:

Magic Mitt for Your Makeup!

I don't know about you, but at the end of the night the last thing I feel like doing is taking off my makeup and washing my face.  The makeup remover, the cotton rounds, cleanser- BLAH!  Since it is imperative to the integrity of your skin that you do take your makeup off, Jane Iredale has come up with a magical solution- The Magic Mitt!  I have a lot of clients/friends tell me that they don't like using makeup removers so I knew I had to try it out and fill you in..

What they say it does: Iredale's new technology claims to take off all of your makeup with only water and the mitt, that's it.  You put the mitt on (it's like a washcloth-mitten), soak it in warm water and wipe your makeup off in circular motions.  Rinse it off when you're done- that's it.  Too easy, right?
What it really does: I found that the mitt did in fact take off.. everything!  I can't believe it but it really does take everything off and rinse clean in warm water with just a dab of soap.  Now,  I haven't tried it on any of my heavy duty waterproof makeup yet but I can assure you, for your everyday makeup this is such an easy solution at the end of the day.

This is now a permanent fixture in my toiletry bag- perfect for travel! Of course, my only caution is to remember to tone and moisturize after the mitt- this is not a skin care regimen replacement, it is only taking off your make up. :-P

Listen Up: The Hydroquinone Dirty Truth

We all have dark acne scars, sun spots, areas of hyperpigmentation or even freckles we would like to lighten and have disappear- right? Well contrary to a way-too-popular belief, hydroquinone is not the way to accomplish this. In fact, it has been called a 'Cancer-causing skin bleach' in the beauty industry!

Fairly unbeknownst to most of us, the FDA proposed a ban against over the counter sales of any products including the lightening ingredient in 2006 mainly on the basis of “high absorption, reports of exogenous ochronosis in humans, and murine hepatic adenomas, renal adenomas, and leukemia with large doses over extended time periods.” In plain English- It is a proven carcinogen in rodents, can cause the skin to become dark and thick, may produce yellow and gray dome-shaped spots AND may cause your adrenal gland to mis-function. However, due to the cash this very dangerous chemical brings in, the ban has not taken effect.

Don't you think that if a ultra-conservative administration such as the FDA is concerned with the safety of this ingredient that maybe-just maybe- we should be concerned? Not to mention that it is banned from the typically liberal Europe, Japan, and Australia. No joke.

So what can you use to help lighten those pesky dark spots?  Aside from getting regular facials or cool peels with spot treatments (this avoids lightening your whole face while targeting the areas of concern), some natural skin lighteners include bearberry extract, mulberry, white mulberry, licorice extract (specifically glabridin), azelaic acid, stabilized vitamin-C (L-ascorbic acid, ascorbic acid and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate) all have proven skin-lightening effects without the risky side effects of hydroquinone.
